Kelham Island has been replaced by Nether Edge on the list published by The Times for best places to live in UK.
The country is divided into regions with Kelham Island being included in last year’s list of best places to live in the North of the country.
This year, the city of Leeds has topped the Northern rankings with Sheffield’s Nether Edge also being included.
Louise Singleton, 44, Landlord of Kelham Island Tavern said: “There has been a lot of change in the area and people trying to get here is always going to be a struggle due to the council constantly changing the roads.”
“Nether Edge has always been a trendy place to live but it is a very different type of place to Kelham Island,” she added.
Businesses within the area were surprised to learn it had been taken off the list as the community continued to flourish with small businesses performing well, and most businesses have grown in the past year.
Farzeen Nasser, 24, Chef at Craft & Dough, said: “Kelham Island is a lively community with the best pubs in Sheffield, that has been ever-growing over the past year and is now more popular than before.”
Kelham Island’s core identity comes from its industrial past, with the construction of the 12th century town ‘Corn Mill’ which created an island in the River Don.
During the Industrial Revolution, when larger enterprises flourished including mills and the infamous Sheffield steel works.
It was around this time that back-to-back terraces and courts were built to serve the area’s industrial workers.
Due to poor sanitation and poorly built structure, these houses underwent slum clearance in the mid-20th century, depopulating the area in favour of more industrial and commercial uses.
However, in recent years Kelham Island has thrived, being a core part of what Sheffield has to offer due to its unique design of the island just outside the centre of the city.
Michel Catenazzi, 40, General Manager at Sardinan Cuisine, said: “Kelham Island brings people from outer Sheffield into the outer part of the centre as it is a very nice area to live with a good nightlife.”
