The Thornberry Animal Sanctuary has organised an abseil down Sheffield Hallam’s Owen Building with the aim of each person raising £1 for every foot.
The Animal Sanctuary, which has previously completed 5ks, 10ks and muddy fun runs to fundraise for the shelter, will scale the 140ft building in the centre of the city on the 13th April.
There are 45 spots for participants to take part in the abseil from 9am to 5pm, with the aim of raising £140 each.
Abi Revill, 22, Marketing Coordinator at the sanctuary said those taking part are “a little bit crazy, but it’s for a brilliant cause and the money really does go a long way. We always say anything for the animals”.
The cost of living crisis has greatly affected the sanctuary. With veterinary bills, insurance pay and the animals’ food all costing significantly more than in previous years.
Miss Revill said: “With the cost of living going up massively it affects a lot of things at our sanctuary.
“We therefore need to raise money to stay alive and make sure we can treat all the animals.”
With a dedicated group of volunteers and supporters in the surrounding area and 63,000 followers on facebook, Thornberry is looking to expand its support system and get more people involved in the shelter in and around the city centre.
Miss Revill added: “Our supporters are incredible, we genuinely couldn’t do a lot of the stuff we do without them.”
In the coming months, the sanctuary is organising a hike over Mount Snowdon as well as hosting an Easter fair where local businesses can hire stalls.
