The Showroom Cinema in Sheffield City Centre hosted twenty film fanatics gathered together to watch the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday night.
The Showroom, known for showing a wide variety of films from all over the globe, was renovated into a cinema in 1993 and has hosted a plethora of different events over the years.
After re-showing every best picture nomination over the week, the Showroom live streamed the event in their café bar from 11pm to 2:30am.
Robert Venn, 50, a film studies teacher at Thomas Rotherham College described the Showroom as “a home from home.”
He said: “It’s the place where I’m most likely to see the films I want to see. I love the architecture and the general ambience.”
To keep the audience entertained while they waited for the big event to start, an Oscars themed quiz took place, quizzing cinephiles on their past Oscars knowledge in exchange for goodies.
Ella Sadler, 20, and Kerry Sterky, 21, were first time attenders of the Showrooms Oscar event.
Ella said: “We’ve never actually done anything like this before, but it’s a different vibe around other people who enjoy the same thing rather than just watching it by ourselves at home.”
Free popcorn was handed to each attendee of the event before the ceremony started, building the excitement for the night to come.
Mel Kanarek, age 47, said “I’ve been coming here since the late 90s, it shows really great films and it’s got such a great atmosphere.”
The night was full of cheers and boos from the audience as the winner of each category was announced.
The event even had its own betting system where you could choose which nominee you believed was going to win which came along with prizes.
“It’s vital to support independent cinemas,” added Robert Venn: “For those of us who actually care about cinema, art house film, foreign language films, cinemas like the Showroom are practically sacred spaces.”
The event came as a great success, bringing film fans from all over Sheffield to enjoy a night of joy, tears and cheering, guaranteeing an event for the 97th Oscars next year.
