A circuit training class has been launched for people with multiple sclerosis to help improve their physical and mental health.

Weekly sessions, which have been organised by the MS Society’s Sheffield and Rotherham group, will run at The Gym in Shalesmoor every Tuesday between 6pm and 8pm starting on 23 April.

The classes are particularly aimed at people who have become stronger through the group’s seated exercise sessions.

Joanna Mason, volunteer group coordinator, who lives with MS herself, said: “I personally know that I need to keep building my strength to help my current MS symptoms and to help myself as I get older with this chronic illness.

“We hope that with this being an evening session we are also providing an alternative opportunity for local MS-ers.”

Sessions will be led by qualified instructors and will offer an initial individual assessment and induction to the gym equipment.

The MS Society says research suggests exercise can be beneficial for people with the condition, improving mood, mobility and muscle strength, alongside helping to manage symptoms.

Ms Mason said: “When I was diagnosed I felt so alone and didn’t know where to turn, I decided to volunteer so that no-one else had to feel the same way.

“I think it’s incredibly important to learn to live well with MS and the services we are running provide physical, social and emotional support.”

The group’s seated exercise classes include one in the Burton Street Foundation every Friday and one at Rotherham’s Leisure Complex every Wednesday.

People attending these groups during MS Awareness Week from 22-28 April are invited to wear orange and join together at Burton Street for coffee and cake following the class on Friday.

Ms Mason added: “The specialist instructors at Community Wellness Services and our group volunteers understand that every MS-er is different and we aim to not only develop awareness but support individuals on their journey.

“I have found a new family of friends who I can turn to for support, we’re stronger together.”

The Sheffield and Rotherham group also hosts a monthly social group at the MS Therapy Centre in Catcliffe.
