Kelham Carnival has returned for the second time with a glorious celebration of food, drink and an appreciation for the local community.

About 600 people visited the carnival on Sunday, hosted by the Saw Grinders Union.

Alpozan, 32, owner of Saw Grinders Union said: “The idea was taken from Notting Hill Carnival, and our idea is that something needs to be started to celebrate the rich history of Kelham Island and as an up and coming area. Our aim is to get all of the local businesses, bars and restaurants involved.”

The carnival showcased food from multiple vendors including Taste of Korea, Neapolitan Pizza, Doner Turkish Kebab and, for something sweet, Project D.

Teresa Rodriguez, 32, and Daniel Hodgson, 29, both from Rotherham, said: “It’s our first time at the carnival. We are most looking forward to the diverse range of foods. We also heard that there’s going to be some entertainment as well. It’s a nice way to spend the bank holiday weekend and make the most of the sun and good weather in Kelham Island.”

Face painting by Glitter Studio and rum tasting were also available.

Kim Baker, 43, owner of Glitter Studio said: “This is my first time at Kelham carnival. I am really looking forward to the carnival vibe, seeing lots of happy people and the good weather we are having.”

Music was provided by a DJ, marching band and an acoustic set.

At approximately 3.30pm a parade arrived in the courtyard accompanied by a marching band and carnival performers.

In a follow up Alpozan said: “It was a big success and we are already planning for next year’s carnival to make it even bigger and better.”

The carnival was started in 2022 with approximately 600 people attending. However due to adverse weather conditions the carnival was cancelled in 2023.
