A baby Llama who is the newest edition at Graves Park Animal Farm, has been named Pitta by members of the public on Facebook.

The baby was born at the end of January and is part of a herd of 20 Llamas, all of which are a huge attraction to the park for visitors.

Katie Oxley, a volunteer at the park said: “It’s definitely brought more people in, the kids want to come and see the babies.”

“Jack the Head Farmer is quite specific on what he names the animals and Pitta was his favourite.”

The name was picked from multiple comments on a Facebook post from the 26t February, which asked the public for help naming the baby.

Over 500 names were suggested on the Facebook post with suggestions to name it. Clayton which appeared to be quite popular, as well as Hendos, a reference to Sheffield’s famous Henderson’s relish.

Other suggestions included ‘Lee,’ ‘Fluffy,’ ‘Cucumber,’ ‘Harvey,’ ‘Pickle’ and ‘Ely,’ amongst many others.

However the name Pitta was the most popular and fits in nicely with the five week old’s siblings, called Lettuce and Hummus.

Kurtis Crossland, Chair of Sheffield City Communities, Parks and Leisure Policy Committee said: “Being one of the first newborns during this year’s spring season, we want locals to get involved in naming the Cria, giving it a warm welcome to one of Sheffield’s most notorious animal farms.”

Baby Pitta and her mum are both currently being moved to the farm’s ‘satellite sites’ where they graze the conservation areas to help improve the land for the wildlife.

Llamas originate in South America and their diet majorly consists of grass, hence making them great for grazing.

Food can be purchased from the farm for £1.50 giving the opportunity to feed the Llamas and the baby Llamas, also known as a Cria.

The animal park also holds Alpacas, Lambs and Sheep, Pigs, Horses, Birds and many others and currently is holding bottle feeding experiences for the Lambs which have also been very popular.

A Facebook post will be released this week announcing the name to the public officially.
