Sheffield-based Danish cafe, HYGGE, has announced a new store that is set to open near Pounds Park in Elshaw House, the city’s first zero-carbon office block.
HYGGE Cafe opened its first store in 2019 and it has since become a staple of the city, with two stores already open, and another one on the horizon.
Sustainability is a central theme to the HYGGE brand as their to-go packaging and coffee cups are made of biodegradable, compostable, or recyclable materials.
Takara Start, marketing manager of HYGGE said: “We want to create spaces that are not only inviting and comfortable but also more environmentally responsible.”
Ms Start added that opening a store in Elshaw House ‘feels like a step in the right direction’.

Elshaw House is an electric building part of the Heart of the City regeneration project on Carver Street with the purpose to minimise operational energy consumption through its design and mixed mode ventilation.
The partnership between Elshaw House and HYGGE cafe is an example of the steps Sheffield is taking to create a more sustainable environment and regenerate the city.
Ms Start said that Elshaw House ‘represents a forward-thinking approach to sustainability’ and that being a part of the project gives the cafe ‘the opportunity to make better choices.’
She added: “By opening in Elshaw House, we hope to encourage customers to embrace a more mindful way of living — whether that’s through choosing a reusable cup or supporting local suppliers.”
HYGGE cafe ‘wants to show that small, conscious changes can make a difference.’
With the Heart of the City regeneration project promoted by the city council, Sheffield’s business community will have more opportunities to grow sustainably, having HYGGE cafe as an example.
In regards to the possibility of the city’s sustainable project expanding to other areas or influencing other businesses, Ms Start said: “Sustainability isn’t about perfection — it’s about progress, and we believe that as more businesses take steps in the right direction, it will create a ripple effect.
“We’re excited to be part of this movement and look forward to seeing how Sheffield continues to grow as a greener, more forward-thinking city.”
