An online magazine has launched its first print publication at the end of Sheffield Beer Week aiming to bring more media coverage of beer culture.
Katie Mather, deputy editor for the online Pellicle magazine, published A Place To Be which she describes as ‘a collection of found spaces and places-within-places to step inside, escape the real world and enjoy a little drink’.
A Place To Be is a 20-page magazine which includes four original pieces and two reworks of her earlier pieces and covers some of Ms Mather’s favourite out-of-the-ordinary drinking spaces to which many readers have related to.
Matthew Curtis, 41, founder of the Pellicle said: “We started doing it because nobody writes about a pub. It has a more cultural connection to beer.
“Pubs have become this amazing valuable space. They have a sense of permanence.”
Ms Mather shared her personal experiences of drinking beer in unusual, small spaces and read excerpts from the magazine at Sheffield Beer Week. These included ‘A balcony on holiday’, ‘Train beers’, and ‘My favourite pub is the petrol station’ all of which brought a light-hearted outlook to beer culture.
Talking of her time writing this magazine and reminiscing her experiences, Ms Mather said: “It has made me feel like I’m separate from reality. I’m free. I’m not restricted [by time].”
By printing this magazine, both Mr Curtis and Ms Mather want to bring more attention to beer culture and make it as entertaining as wine culture and other drinking cultures that circulate the media.
The issue has sold over 250 copies so far and there are possible plans for Ms Mather to continue with her work soon. It is available to buy through the Pellicle magazine‘s website.
