A group of 12 student photographers in Sheffield are fundraising for a photography exhibition of ‘women united by art’, with spare funds being donated to Sheffield’s women’s aid.

The exhibition is titled ‘Convergence’, and will be hosted in public learning space Soft Grounds on The Moor, running from 13 May to 16 May.

There will be live music, drinks and photography on display from the 12 student photographers, who are all second year students at Sheffield Hallam University.

They have said the aim of the event is ‘to get them all seen’ as well as to raise awareness to issues their photography covers.

Maryam Eaton, a photographer in the team said: “Everyone is touching on different issues. In my work I’m doing a political statement about current social situations with ongoing politics.

She added: “We are all just exploring different styles and trying to get out there as young photographers.”

They are currently fundraising for catalogues and to rent out the space, but have said they’ve already had ‘a really good response’ by ‘doing something fun that people are going to enjoy’.

They have recently hosted a pub quiz for their first fundraising event, which raised £180.

Coming up soon they are hosting a bingo event and another pub quiz to further raise money for the event and the charity, and information for this will be posted on their social media.

They aim to raise £800, and also have a Go Fund Me for any donations.

In the run up to the event the group have said they are all currently making their own art and meeting up to collaborate on fundraising plans.

A photographer in the team Faith Whittaker said: ‘The exhibition is celebrating the photographers and embracing everyone’s own styles because we all feel very differently.

“The exhibition is an opportunity for the photographers to see things in a new way, as we are wanting to experiment more.”

Megan Bryant, the group leader of the project said they have not been too specific on the theme of the exhibition.

She said: “We have left it very open because people want to do many different things.

“I feel like if you give it one direction it becomes way too focused and people see the same thing 12 times.”

Faith added: ‘’We all do quite a bit of research and we have our own specific styles. Meg shoots self portraits whereas I would rather take pictures of other people.”

The exhibition has been in planning since December when the group was formed. The exhibition will show a range of photography in a variety of styles.

The exhibition will showcase the team of student photographers work, which includes work from Megan Bryant, Edie Gale, Faith Whittaker, Caitlin Fletcher, Maryam Eaton, Keanna Cooke, Katie Booth, Brooke Gregory, Ellie Greenwood, Jess Eddy, Daisy Brown and Livia Duncan Zirnstein.

The team is currently advertising for bands to play at the exhibition, and you can reach them at shu.convergance@gmail.com.
