A huge wildfire in the Peak District National Park resulted in multiple fire crews being called out in the early hours of the morning.

At 12.09am (March 21), South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue received reports of a wildfire in the area of Derwent Reservoir.

Adiy Siddiq, 19, student, was camping nearby with his friends when he saw the fire and called it in.

Mr Siddiq said: “What looked like an orange tint on the horizon turned out to be a fire spanning over a kilometre, engulfing everything in its path. We rapidly packed up, running away and shouting to the other tents as we went.”

Firefighters from Rivelin and a crew from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue attended the scene, aided by South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue’s specialised Polaris vehicle.

At 11.50am this morning, fire services reported that the incident was concluded, and that they had left the scene.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “We have made good progress tackling the fire throughout the morning, despite working on difficult terrain.”

Fire crews are liaising with partners at the National Trust and the RSPB to mitigate damage caused by the fire.

No injuries have been reported.
