Safer roads are being promised in Sheffield thanks to a £3million investment toward new crossings and upgraded junctions.
Pedestrian crossings will be installed in locations such as Crookes Valley Road, which was identified by the Department of Transport as one of the 27 urban roads with the highest rates of road collisions in the UK.
Councillor Ben Miskell, chair of Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy at the city council, said: “Sheffield is transforming, we need safer, more accessible streets to match. Investing in crossings, 20mph zones, and cycling infrastructure will make our city safer and easier to navigate.
“We are committed to making Sheffield’s roads, pavements and cycle paths as safe as possible. These upgrades will help prevent accidents and create a safer city for all.”
Sheffield Council’s long term goal is ‘vision zero’ where it aims to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on the city’s roads.
During National Road Safety Week in November, South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard revealed over the last five years 190 people had been killed and 3,819 people seriously injured from road collisions in the county.
He said: “The number of deaths and serious injuries on South Yorkshire’s roads is far too high.
“Our road network has to be safe for everyone who uses and wants to use it. That’s why I’ve made Vision Zero the goal in South Yorkshire, because one death on our roads is one too many.”
A £13million package has also been set up to improve cycling routes, 20mph zones and public rights of way by 2027 in areas including Handsworth Grange Road, London Road and Birley Spa Lane.
These locations were chosen based on safety concerns and collision data, prioritising areas where pedestrians need better protection.
