University of Sheffield’s Bummit and Music Culture Societies have been hosting non-profit music events in the hopes of raising funds for charity.
The events, which are organised by the societies and hosted by various small venues across Sheffield, are student-run gigs that help support local and national charities that each society is involved with.
Temporary frontman, Aaron, who stepped in to help Agropaco, a band which performed at Shakespeare’s, Sheffield in support of Bummit and The Music Culture society on Wednesday 19 March, expressed his gratitude for the turnout.
He said “We just want to thank everyone for turning up and supporting charity.”
The Bummit hitch-hike society, which was established in 2003, has raised over £13 million for charity from events such as student gigs, fundraisers and clothes sales.
These fundraisers are often held by students who partake in the Baby-Bummit and Big-Bummit, which are hitchhiking events to destinations such as Edinburgh, Barcelona etc.
This year, the charities they support are: The Snowdrop Project, City of Sanctuary, Haven, Sheffield S6 Foodbank, and Iniciatíva Inakosť (Initiative Otherness), a Slovakian charity as the Big Bummit 2025 is to Bratislava.
Bummit Hitchhike’s Instagram page released a statement to urge participants to keep fundraising, saying “These local and Slovakian charities will hugely benefit from your fundraising by keeping doing their life changing work for people in all walks of life.”
Alongside this, The Music Culture Society, which was established in 2011, puts on student-led gigs, some of which are also in place to help support charities.
The Music Culture society has previously held gigs in support of charities such as the Snowdrop Project and the Sarah Nulty Power of Music Foundation, which exists to support people in ‘experiencing the transformative power of music’.
Their next charity-gig, taking place on Saturday 29 March, will be held in Plot 22. Plot 22 is a music venue which is also part of a local social enterprise called RiteTrax. RiteTrax is a non-profit which supports vulnerable young people and adults through music, which also works with local charities to support people in recovery through events such as their ‘sober socials’.
