Sheffield Celebrates National Sake Week

National Sake Week is now in Sheffield with the event taking place from the 7th May to 11th May.

Over 100 other venues all over the country are participating in National Sake Week, which is a large increase in participating venues since last year’s event.

It will feature sake fuelled events such as the Tengu Terrace Takeover, which will feature a BBQ pairing event and gives people to try hard to find premium grade sake.

The event will take place on 9th May and it will cost £65 per person which can be enjoyed at JÖRO’s outdoor terrace.

The event was organised by Oliver Kaviani, restaurant manager at JÖRO, and he spoke about how he fell in love with the art of sake and what the week of events will hold.

Mr Kaviani first started “delving into the world of sake” during the COVID-19 lockdown where he learnt about the inner workings of what sake is and how to make it.

“I decided that if I was to also enjoy a drink in lockdown, I may as well learn about something new as well”

Mr Kavani was determined to open up the opportunity to try different sakes for the public, as most of the sake served at the event would usually be only available for people in the drinks trade.

“We jumped at the opportunity to shine the light on sake as we feel it is something that is relatively misunderstood especially in the UK”

Last year was the first year National Sake Week took place and it was a very popular event. Mr Kaviani said: “People are really interested to learn about something new, and they also get to enjoy themselves at the same time.”

“We’re really receptive to feedback, on the back of this week we’ll see how everything has gone and hopefully come back with even bigger events next year.”

Such as the chance to get a  WSET level 2 Qualification in sake which will be taking place in September, it will be open to the public and people in the drinks trade which gives people the perfect opportunity to learn about sake in the North of England.
