A University of Sheffield student whose family live in Iran has spoken out on the mixed reactions following US and Israeli airstrikes, which resulted in the death of Ali Khamenei.
The people of Iran have been under strict religious regime for decades until airstrikes set by the US and Israel government assassinated their leader.
A 19-year-old student in Sheffield whose family is Iranian said, “People have been protesting for forty seven years because we feel oppressed. The people of Iran want to get rid of the government and bring back the King.”
The students family reside in the capital city, Tehran where the strikes are targeting and civilians have been heavily affected under Khamenei’s rule.
The student said: “I can only hope my family are safe and that the strikes will only be targeting the government and not innocent people.”
The US and Israel government have targeted Iran with air strikes for the fourth day in a row after a series of Israeli air strikes which assassinated Khamenei in the capital city of Tehran just a few days ago.
In today’s Prime Minister’s questions at the House of Commons leader of the Conservative party, Badenoch told the PM: “We’re in this war, whether they like it or not.”
Kier Starmer responded with a list of planned deployments, saying that the US are now going to use UK bases to conduct operations to strike against Iranian missiles.
The student also said: “If the Kier Starmer involves our own military it must be to strike against the government and not the people of Iran. I hope for the freedom of the people of Iran and that their deaths haven’t been in vain.”
It is estimated that at least 555 Iranian civilians have been killed in US-Israeli air strikes.
Despite the mixed opinions on President Trump’s involvement, the student said, “People in Iran want to get rid of the government and their oppressive regime. Donald Trump has helped us.”
In January the country’s people took to the streets in protest of an internet blackout and an estimated 30,000 protestors were killed.
The people of Iran has been under the rule of the Islamic Republic since they took over in 1979 after over throwing its monarchy.
