“Can’t wait to be king!” – Walkley Primary school to raise £950 for lion cub sculpture

Almost £1k is to be raised by St Mary’s CE primary, Walkley to adopt a lion cub sculpture from the Pride of Yorkshire trail.

St Mary’s have made £180 by hosting a bake sale with cakes donated by their catering provider, The Pantry.

The school have been involved with the ‘Pride of Yorkshire’ trails for ten years and have continually been committed to raising money for the children’s hospital.

Sylvie Roux, the event organiser and cover teacher for the school said: “It is one of the most valuable charities that we have locally.”

The school plans to hold a raffle on the 20th of March to reach their goal of £950 for the sculpture.

St Mary’s has received a range of donations from Sheffield united football tickets to vouchers for local restaurants and businesses.

The Pantry’s valentines day themed biscuits for the school bake sale.

Ms Roux added: “It has been lovely to see how generous people are.”

Joy Burgess, the school’s head-teacher said: “Staff and parents and the community have generously donated and bought raffle prizes to raise funds and our own PFA are busy organising an Easter disco with our very own resident school DJ! It really shows how everyone’s kindness can help bring a community together, by everyone playing their part to help.”

‘Pride of Yorkshire’ have been famed for holding their successful trails from the bear trail in 2021 to ‘Herd of Sheffield’ in 2016, now with ‘Feel the Roar’ they aim to raise over £2.8 million for the children’s hospital on its 150th year of service.

The sculpture trail opens in June and will be found all over Sheffield and surrounding areas featuring lions, lionesses and cubs to spread colour and creativity across the city.

Ms Burgess said: “The project is an amazing opportunity to work together with the whole school community to help raise vital funds for an amazing charity.”

The sculpture will be painted by the children, inspired by the school’s curriculum of celebrating nature and biodiversity.

Ms Roux said: “We are proud of the biodiversity in the local area.”

The school encourages anyone who wants to support their efforts to donate raffle prizes or buy tickets to reach the £950 target .
