Residents evacuated after tree collapses on houses near Crookes Valley Park in Sheffield

Multiple people were impacted when a large tree collapsed onto their homes following strong winds.

Firefighters were called to a building in Harcourt Road near Crookes Valley Park after flats were hit by a tree which fell during strong winds.

Nobody was hurt but some damage was caused to the roof and chimney and residents were evacuated from two properties as a safety precaution to allow the South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service to safely remove debris.

The road was closed to traffic as two fire engines attended the scene.

A resident who lives near to the affected house said it looked like some other trees along the same alleyway also looked like they were going to fall down or were already causing damage to residents’ fences.

The incident happened on Friday 13 March.

Safiya Nasir, a 20 year old student. who lives on the road said her car was smashed as a result.

She said: “There was damage to the body of the car as the door has been dented as well as the bonnet and paintwork damage. In addition, the windscreen has been shattered and I’m yet to find out if it’s driveable.

“Hopefully it’s fine, however, it was quite a shock when I went to check if the neighbours were okay and the branch had carried over from the back of the house despite the trees not being visible from the front. Overall, I’m just glad nobody was hurt”

The incident was believed to be caused by strong winds on Thursday evening that carried through to Friday afternoon.

Reports suggest the wind speed on Friday morning was around 20mph with gusts of over 30mph.

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue confirmed on Facebook that two fire engines were in attendance to make the property and surrounding area safe and the road was closed for some time – which potentially caused some delays and congestion in the area following a new road layout.

Following this incident and also as a result of the weather, a tree fell down at Crewe Flats in Endcliffe Student Village but no damage or injuries were reported.
