Pressure at the pump: petrol price surge increases cost of living stress

The cost of living has risen amid the US-Iran war as global oil prices have increased significantly in recent months, causing petrol and diesel prices to jump across Sheffield.

Since the conflict in Iran started on 28 February the global transportation and production of energy has been severely reduced due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Jayson Warner, 54, a traffic enforcement officer, claims that prices have started to become increasingly unaffordable.

He said: “We shop about as cheap as we can, but everything seems to be the same price.

“We’ve had to keep topping it up, so instead of keeping it too low to a point where you have to go and fill up, we try and keep it topped up because prices have started gradually edging up and it becomes expensive if you keep going back to the pumps.”

Mr Warner discussed how he and his family have begun to look for alternative modes of transport to limit expenditure: “I also cycle now to try and keep the cost down. Because I work for the council, I get an E-bike. I’ve had it for two weeks now and I am finding riding effortless.”

These effects of the cost of living have also been felt by students in Sheffield, a well known student based city.

Nancy Hartill, 20, a Zoology student at the university, said that despite having a part time job, costs as a student have become too high recently.

Miss Hartill said: “I’ve had to decide recently where to start cutting costs and I think keeping my car at university next year will be the next one because it’s just become too expensive to fill up frequently.”

This week the government said the UK might face increased food, energy and flight ticket prices for at least eight months after the end of the war.

Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister Darren Jones told the BBC the government was “looking at all of those things” as it looks at plans to counteract the possible fuel and food shortages caused by the war.

To help reduce the effects of the cost of living there are several useful websites to help you find the most affordable petrol prices near you, such as petrolmap.co.uk which allows you to insert your postcode to help find the cheapest pumps in your area.
