The winner will receive a whopping £10 million reward to help them deliver a show-stopping year of cultural activity.

Former leader of the Sheffield City council, Tom Hunt said, “We are incredibly proud that our city has been longlisted for UK City of Culture 2029. This city has always been powered by creativity – seen in our globally influential music, film, games and art.

“We don’t just put culture on a stage, we live it, make it and share it with the world. Grown from the ground up, our culture is shaped by everyone that calls Sheffield home.”

Sheffield has rapidly established itself as one of the UK’s most dynamic cultural hubs, showcasing a growing sense of confidence and creative vitality across the city. Renowned for its globally influential contributions to music, film, art and gaming, as well as its major events and vibrant performance scene, the city continues to thrive.

Culture Sheffield, which is part of Sheffield City Council, said in a statement: “Winning this title will have enormous benefits to our communities, with the potential to attract millions of pounds of additional investment and thousands of visitors to our region.”

“It’s really important for Sheffield to have such cultural ties as it helps provide tangible oppurtunities for young people who may currently feel disconnected.”

Having this nomination helps Sheffield demonstrate the community pride that all of their residents feel and believe. It will help with regeneration, employment opportunities, and will bring together different communities, ensuring that its distinct cultural identity and “Steel City” legacy receive the international attention they deserve.

Former Coun Hunt also said : “This is a brilliant moment for our city and a chance to showcase the confidence, creativity and ambition that defines Sheffield today. Let’s dream big and celebrate loudly.”
