Fans have welcomed confirmation that Sheffield will remain the home of the world snooker championships, with the Crucible set to host the tournament until 2045.
Supporters across Sheffield have reacted positively to the announcement, which secures the future of snooker’s largest event in the Crucible Theatre. One fan, Robert Donaldson, told ShefLive that “the Crucible is snooker’s home and anywhere else wouldn’t cut it.”
Outside the Crucible, fans gathering in the spring sunshine spoke about what the venue means to them, with many pointing to its irreplaceable atmosphere.
Snooker fan Ali Falk highlighted the importance of hosting the championships to the local area, saying that “it brings significant opportunities and commerce to the city”.
The championship, organised by the World Snooker Tour, has been staged at the Crucible since 1977, making it one of the longest standing sporting venue partnerships in the UK, now in its 49th year of hosting.
The deal struck between the World Snooker Tour and Sheffield City Council will see the tournament remain in the city until at least 2045, with an option to extend by a further five years. A £45 million redevelopment package will see the venue renovated, adding 500 seats to the venue and increasing its capacity to 1,500.
This agreement addresses growing questions about the Crucible’s suitability to continue hosting such a prestigious event. Concerns had centered around the venue’s size and ageing facilities, with increased international interest, including from Saudi Arabia.
As part of the redevelopment, the Crucible Theatre is expected to close for around 18 months after the 2028 tournament, meaning the championship will temporarily be held at an alternative venue. While organisers have yet to confirm where that will be, this news has not dampened enthusiasm amongst fans, who have focused on the long term positives of renovation.
Snooker fan Patrick Quish praised the work of those involved in the deal.
He said: “Nowhere else will have that special atmosphere. Sheffield and the Crucible is the home of World Championship Snooker. Well done to all involved in keeping it in Sheffield.”
