Operation Scorpion sees five arrested including drug related offences.

A police operation in Sheffield city centre has seen five arrested and the recovery of a knife last week.

South Yorkshire Police has been conducting dedicated operations in an effort to tackle violent crime and drug distribution in Sheffield City Centre.

The late hours of the 24th and early hours of the 25th February saw uniformed police officers in collaboration with the force’s licensing team and the Road Policing Group conduct a series of arrests in relation to Operation Scorpion. 

Sgt Simon Kirkham of South Yorkshire Police and operation lead said: “It was great to be out in Sheffield again for another successful Operation Scorpion, which once again saw some important results achieved.”

Throughout the evening, police stopped six people, as well as two vehicles and a house was also searched, leading to five arrests. 

Three of the arrests were drug related charges, another saw an arrest in which a driver was over the legal drug driving limit and a person was arrested for the possession of a knife as well as a small amount of cannabis.

Police also visited 15 night time venues where they conducted toilet drug checks.

Operation Scorpion is designed to tackle Violent crime and Drug distribution with a focus on late night economy. 

Sgt Kirkham added: “I am pleased that as a result of this activity, five people who were committing criminality in the night time economy were arrested, and of note, a knife was taken off the streets.

“People who live in and visit our city should be able to visit the night time economy without fear of violence.”
