Sheffield councillor calls for investment and communication following burst water pipe

A Hillsborough councillor has criticised Yorkshire Water’s response to a pipe that burst under Oakland Road last weekend and caused days of disruption.

Councillor Henry Nottage said the water company had not explained to residents how long work would take.

Those living on Oakland Road and surrounding roads took to social media to complain about discolouration to water and changes to water pressure.

Coun Nottage said: “There could have been better communication by Yorkshire Water in terms of effect on the water quality for local houses and also what the likely timescales for the repair were going to be.”

Matchday parking for Sheffield Wednesday prevented Yorkshire Water from conducting repairs when the pipe burst on 23 February, with work taking place from the following day until 27 February.

Councillor Nottage added: “We do seem to be experiencing burst pipes more regularly and I would put that down to a lack of investment in infrastructure since water companies got privatised.

“I think we need to be prepared for the future and invest everything we can in making sure that we’re not losing water through leaks.”

The Environment Agency’s Connected By Water Action Plan sees Sheffield City Council working closely with Yorkshire Water to ensure a reduction to flood risk.

Yorkshire Water have been contacted for a response to Coun Nottage’s comments but have not since responded.
