A newly formed South Yorkshire based beer group has aimed to break through a typically male dominated industry and ignited a sense of community for women who share a love of beer.
Jules Gray, owner of Hop Hideout and founder of Sheffield Beer Week, has set up South Yorks Beer Girls, a social group for women with an interest in beer alongside Rachel Green and Helen-Fay Seaton.
Jules’ passion shines through her work and dedication to Sheffield Beer Week and Hop Hideout, for her “it’s not just about beer” but rather the people and stories behind the bottle. She hopes to share this passion and create a bigger interest in beer amongst women.
In celebration of Sheffield Beer Week, Hop Hideout is hosting a social, welcoming all to join. The event is taking place tonight, Tuesday 5th March at 6.30pm and consists of a ‘mini beer trail’ finishing at Lost in West Bar.
Jules hopes to bring together an inclusive “non-judgmental, friendly space” for women who share the same interest in beer.
With Sheffield Beer Week celebrating its 10th Anniversary, Beer week reminds us of “how incredible it is that we can celebrate what we have here is so special”.
This year Beer Week remembers Ethel Mary Bassett Ward, a countryside campaigner, who spent her life campaigning for the development of the first national park in Britain, The Peak District National Park.
For Jules, there has always been a love for beer and British ale, she now uses that love to collaborate with others and experiment with flavours.
Jules has had the opportunity this year to work in collaboration with the festival of the outdoors and Triple Point Brewery to create a new beer inspired by Ethel’s contribution to Sheffield’s countryside.
The beer’s earnings will go towards the countryside charity and the women in beer organisation, which aims to support all those who identify as women in the industry.
Jules, Said: “We support women in the industry”
“It’s just natural for me to do that.”
By collaborating with other women in the industry and sharing her passion, Jules Gray is promoting the beer community in Sheffield and its rich history, whilst advocating for diversity for women and beer.
