Sheffield’s expanding Peddler Market returns to Kelham Island for monthly food festival

The founder of a Sheffield event which is expanding across the north of England says it will never forget its roots.

Peddler Market returned to Kelham Island last weekend for food, fun, music and more.

The market, located on Burton Road in Sheffield, offers live music, multiple food vendors, and a variety of craft beer samples for visitors to enjoy on a monthly basis.

Tim Hopkinson, 49, a university teacher from Sheffield, previously visited the event. He said: ‘’It’s a great atmosphere with lots of people going along and having a good time, you can get different types of food and is great for all the family.’’

The market showcases the most popular street food across the UK and other vendors for fashion, art and more.

Andi Creffield, 44, head of marketing at Peddler Market and Events from Sheffield, said: “It is the people in attendance that make these events what they are.”

The owner, Ben Smith, relocated to Sheffield in 2013 and said he noticed an absence of the “thriving food culture” he had previously experienced in London.

He said: “There is a pioneering spirit in this area and we like to think we have played a part in re-imagining Kelham Island’s identity.”

Darci Clare, 20, a barista from Bristol said: “You can tell the vendors are very passionate about what they’re selling, plus there’s so many vegan options which I loved.”

The food provided is inclusive, with options for many tastes and dietary preferences.

Daniel Pinch, 33, founder of Pellista from Sheffield, said: “If it wasn’t for the Peddler Market, we wouldn’t have been known, and now we have a restaurant in Sharrow Vale.”

The event not only brought people across the UK together but families and their furry friends.

Sustainability is also an important practice to the Peddler Market team. Food waste is diverted and used for energy production and all packaging is compostable and biodegradable.

The organisers also spoke about their exciting plans to convert their energy source to renewable sources by instilling energy generation facilities in their warehouse.

The Peddler Market has already held events in Chesterfield and Wakefield and is due to launch in Leeds in April but despite their expansion, Mr Smith said: “We always make sure we never forget our roots.”
