Event organizer Jo Gallacher, 28, the founder and co-ordinator of the Sheffield Feminist Book Club and Sheffield University alumni, said she understands it is difficult to find like-minded individuals and believes that the club is a good opportunity to find friend and socialise.
She said: “The club is really amazing opportunity for people to get up close and personal.”
The book the group will discuss on March 19 is about the connections between individuals, even when they are separated by distance or death.
Story was inspired by an author’s mother experiences during her immigration to France, however the events were relocated to Thatcher’s Britain.
The story starts with three siblings decision to flee their village and attempt a journey to Hong Kong, soon after American troops leave Vietnam.
Up to 30 people can attend each session.
Jo Gallacher, said: “Sheffield is a great city in terms of there is so much creativity out there.”
“There is a real appetite for literary events, but there were not loads going on in Sheffield in terms of book clubs.”
Feminist Book Club is group of book lovers who meet once a month to discuss books through a feminist lens.
Jo said: – “It is meant to be a nice, safe space for people, whoever you are, wherever you come from, to come and talk about a shared love of books.”
The first, North London Feminist Book Club, was set up in the beginning of 2023 and had a huge success (https://www.londonfeministbookclub.co.uk)
Jo shares a special bound with the city as she met Rebecca James, co-ordinator of South London, North London and corporate book clubs, in Sheffield.
Organisers are happy to help these who cannot afford to pay the entry price.
The book club is hosting one event each month and welcomes everyone.
