A Sheffield pub has been named one of the UK’s top Irish bars ahead of St. Patrick’s Day this Sunday.
The Dog and Partridge, on Trippet Lane in the city centre, made the top 10 of the list compiled by famous Irish brewery Guinness.
Landlord Conor Smith, 49, said: “I’m quite humbled, to be honest. It’s not like we entered a competition.
“It’s a real honour to be mentioned. The other pubs on the list are also great.”
Conor said the key to the pub’s success was the people who work there.
He said: “The credit goes to the staff, there’s a small team but they’re hardworking.
“I see the people who visit as like guests in my home. To me that’s what pubs should be. You can tell the difference between a chain and an independent pub.”
He also said that usual festivities to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at the pub include televised matches of rugby union and Gaelic football, Irish dancing, music and, of course, beer.
In its entry, Guinness said: “The Irish owned Dog & Partridge pub is one of the oldest free houses, built in 1796 and an integral part of the city’s make up.
“From every flavour of Taytos to daily served soul food (ask for Conor’s Irish Stew!), a genuine lively atmosphere with regular folk music nights to 0.0% Guinness on micro draught for those embracing moderation, this pub really has it all for a great St Patrick’s Day celebration.”
The list includes other bars and pubs from across the UK, including ones in Manchester, London and North Tyneside.
