Parking charges to increase on Sundays in Sheffield

Sunday parking fees are to double for some Sheffield motorists in a move councillors say will bring changes in line with the rest of the week.

The decision was made by Sheffield City Council to help better manage parking demand and contribute to wider traffic management.

Caroline Hamilton, 44, a resident of Sheffield said: “I do most of my shopping and running errands on Sundays so its frustrating that the rates had to change, especially for us residents.”

The Sunday pay-and-display parking fee is due to increase from £1 per hour to £2 per hour in zone one areas, and from 50p to £1 per hour in zone two areas for on-street city centre parking.

The increase in pay and display fees came along with reviews relating to the charging of parking permits, bay suspensions and parking dispensations.

These decisions were introduced by the Waste and Street Committee, after disputes over whether these should be made by the Transport Committee.

The Transport Committee had more concerns over the climate and the environment.

Councillor Mark Jones said: “I think we need to steer away from politics on this issue.”

Sam Cornish, 19, a student at the University of Sheffield said: “I have my car at uni and I don’t think the tariff increase would make much of a difference as to whether I park at pay and display.

“Most of the time I walk into the city centre anyway, but I would still park despite the price increase.”

The evening tariff on Sundays has also been applied and has risen to a £2 flat rate for over an hour in zones one and two.

Coun Mike Chaplin on this issue said: “I welcome the report, it puts right an anomaly and I think it will be welcomed by everyone.”
