The University of Sheffield maintained a large lead over Hallam in Sheffield’s Varsity tournament following field sports fixtures last week.

Out of the 16 events that took place at Sheffield Hallam Sports Park on last Wednesday, the University of Sheffield took home 12 wins, excluding one draw.

The Sports Park event consisted of most of the field sports and takes place mid-way the through the three week Varsity course, throughout which some of the principal sports team which represent both Sheffield Hallam and the University of Sheffield compete against one another.

A spokesperson for Sheffield Varsity said: “Varsity is a showcase and celebration of student sport in the city of Sheffield.”

A total of 45 different sports teams took part throughout the whole Varsity showdown across both universities this year.

The Uni now lead 25.5-11.5 against Sheffield Hallam for the total of the games so far.

Grace Lowe, 19, a student at the University of Sheffield, and a member of the Mercury team for the Pom cheer Sabre Cats, performed on the day to support the teams and fans.

She said: “The atmosphere was really great, it’s such a good way to see all the sports come together especially when I wouldn’t normally watch them. I really enjoyed cheering at the games, and the women’s rugby crowd were amazing and the most supportive.

“The weather did make it a long and cold day, but cheering in the hail is definitely a memorable experience.”

Some of the men’s and women’s sports teams who took part included football, lacrosse, rugby union and league, and indoor cricket.

The sports committee ran a merchandise stall outside of the pavilion, selling water bottles, temporary tattoos, sunglasses and more and they were raising money for the Danny Porter foundation which raises money for people with cancer or who require neurological surgery.

Forge TV livestreamed the rugby and football fixtures.

The three weeks of Varsity fixtures conclude next Wednesday at the Canon Medical Arena with a closing ceremony and games from the basketball men’s and women’s 1s, and the netball 1s.
