Abseilers descend university building to raise money for Sheffield Children’s Hospital

A team of charity fundraisers have abseiled down the Owen Building in Sheffield.

On Sunday 21st of April, 50 charity fundraisers were strapped in above the Sheffield Hallam Owen Building before braving the 140 ft fall.

The ‘Team Theo’ abseiling event has raised approximately £12,000 for the Children’s Hospital in Sheffield.

The Fundraising Participants had between 10:00 – 16:00 on Sunday to abseil down the University’s main entrance on City Campus overlooking Hallam Square.

This is the first abseil event this year with ‘Team Theo’ running a second in early October of this year.

Sunday’s abseil was just one of many diverse fundraising events held by the ‘Team Theo’s’ organisers; who are named after the children’s hospital mascot.

Future fundraising events include; Hikes, Skydives, 5-a-side tournaments and an additional abseiling.

Registration for these events is available now; Team Theo Events : Home (tchc.org.uk) A minimum of £100 is needed for those wishing to join the fundraiser.

One of the many abseilers taking part, Lauren Morton, 35, said “I want to raise money for a great charity, it’s something to test myself a little because I am terrified of heights”

Lauren managed to raise over £300 towards the hospital in support of her abseil this year.

The Children’s Hospital has stated that the money raised will go towards a comfortable and engaging environment built with children in mind, specialist medical equipment, new facilities to extend the range of treatment provided, and research into the care, prevention and cure of childhood illnesses.

Mrs Morton said: “I know a lot of people that have been there, myself included when I was little, my daughter when she was younger as well and they do a lot of good work.”

The event was originally planned to take place on the 16th of April but was postponed due to unsuitable weather conditions.

If you wish to sign up for the next Charity abseil you must be aged 16 to get involved and those under 18 years old need to be accompanied by a guardian.
