The crime rate in the South East of Sheffield continues to rise despite “crackdown” by South Yorkshire Police.
In November 2023 South Yorkshire Police announced plans for a crackdown on crime hotspots in South East Sheffield called Operation Calibre. This initially helped to create a slight decrease in criminal activity in November 2023 with the number of total crimes in the area dropping from 1658 to 1571 in December 2023.
Since then, crime levels in the South East area have increased significantly reaching 1705 in January and 1718 in February. In addition to this police reported 441 crimes which were related to violence and sexual offences in February alone.

Sheffield resident Mr Tom Lyons said: “I don’t feel safe and try to avoid passing through the Woodhouse area due to its reputation.”
One of the main areas of concern is Woodhouse, which has seen multiple high-profile burglaries within the area in 2024 including a series of burglaries at the St James’ church which has been burgled six times within the past 14 months.
South Yorkshire Policing website currently states that “there are currently no policing priorities available”, despite the rise in crimes within the area.
The most recent crime within this area occurred on 8 April around 12pm when a 46-year-old woman was robbed and suffered injuries as she walked through an underpass.
A police spokesperson said: “It is believed an unknown man on a bike rode into her, before snatching her bag containing an amount of cash and other items and fleeing.”
A man connected to the incident has been described by the police as “white, approximately 20 years old, of a pale complexion and scrawny build, with sunken cheeks and eye sockets. He also has no obvious facial hair”.
