University of Sheffield’s Student Union wins WhatUni ‘Best Student Union’ for the seventh year.

The University of Sheffield has been voted University of the Year, Best Students’ Union, and Best Student Life at the WhatUni Student Choice Awards earlier this week.

This marks the seventh year that the University has won the Best Students’ Union at the WhatUni Choice Awards.

Bertie Goult, 27, an offer holder for the University due to enrol in September, said: “It’s great to know that not only will I get a great education at the university but I will also be able to meet like-minded students and enlarge my circle of friends.”

The Students’ Union, established in 1906, is home to around 30,000 students and runs approximately 320 clubs and societies for them to get involved in.

Amelia Davinghi-Edwards, 22, a 1st year biomedical science student, said: “The students’ union is such a big part of my University experience. I think it’s an important thing to consider when looking for a university.”

The awards are the largest annual university awards in the UK and are solely voted for by students.

Professor Mary Vincent, Vice-President for Education at the University of Sheffield, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be named University of the Year by the Whatuni Student Choice Awards 2024.

“This recognition is a reflection of the tireless efforts of our entire University community – our dedicated and supportive staff, and of course, our incredible students.

“Winning the Best Students’ Union for the seventh year in a row is also a truly remarkable achievement which recognises the vibrant environment, outstanding support services, and plethora of opportunities our Students’ Union provides, allowing our students to thrive both academically and personally.

“Both of these accolades, coupled with the award for Best Student Life, underscores our commitment to providing a world-class learning and teaching environment that fosters academic excellence, personal growth, and a vibrant student life. We are incredibly proud to offer an experience that our students value so highly.”

The University of Sheffield was also shortlisted for awards in the Facilities, Student Support and International categories.

Overall, the University scored 4.69 stars out of 5 and received 1424 reviews from students.

Lily Byrne, President of the University of Sheffield’s Students’ Union, said: “Thank you so much to all of our students who chose to get involved and review us.

“As a Students’ Union, we strive to ensure that our students feel represented, empowered, and have the best possible time at University. Every year we provide thousands of opportunities for students to positively shape their future and have fun.

“It’s wonderful to read the reviews in this year’s awards and understand just how important these opportunities are to our student community.”
