New GP hub to be built at Parson Cross as part of £37m scheme to improve health centres in Sheffield

A new GP hub funded by NHS England is planned to be built on Wordsworth Avenue, Parson Cross, to replace existing buildings that are “no longer fit for purpose”.

It comes after the Integrated Care Board (ICB) found that the conditions of many GP practice buildings in Sheffield were no longer sustainable.

A spokesperson from NHS South Yorkshire said: “Waiting rooms are cramped, there are not enough consultation rooms and space for other services which could help improve people’s health.”

“New health centres would help us to do more for patients on one site. They will also help protect the future of general practice.”

The Wordsworth Avenue centre is to be the first of the new Primary Care Hub developments brought forward for completion and will replace the existing Healthcare Surgery on Palgrave Road in Southey Green and Buchanan Road Surgery in Parson Cross.

The hub is required to address the challenges of the growing population that is estimated to rise from 12,265 to 13,332 in 2041 for The Healthcare Surgery and Buchanan Road Surgery.

The council are also to be given office space within the building which will increase community working.

A report to the committee described the new build medical hub as “transformational” in improving care services.

Damian Watkinson, Finance Manager, said at a Finance Committee meeting: “The whole development will be completely funded by NHS England and then for 60 years the leasing of the building will be met by GPs of the Integrated Care Board with Council acting as landlord only.”

It was confirmed in March 2022 that South Yorkshire would receive 57.5m funding to improve primary care buildings, with 37m allocated for schemes within Sheffield.

The scheme also includes the closure of Burngreave Surgery and Sheffield Medical Centre, with services being relocated to a new centre on Spital Street.

It comes as part of a wider service change within NHS SAPA Primary Care Network of North East Sheffield, Shiregreen and Brightside.

Two other surgeries on Mulberry Street are to be replaced by a city centre GP surgery in the old Royal Bank of Scotland building on Church Street.

The Parson Cross hub is to be completed in 2025.
