It’s the final curtain call for costumes at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre as the public are being invited to an up-and-coming sale later this month.
From Guys and Dolls to Richard III, the Crucible is putting on sale some of their most iconic costumes on Saturday 18 May.
Sally Wilson, Deputy Head of Wardrobe at the Crucible Theatre said: “If anyone’s going to a silly festival this will be perfect for you.”
Costumes range from vintage pieces to a frog costume from Anthony Lau’s ‘The Good Person of Szechwan’.
Debbie Gamble, Head of Wardrobe at Sheffield Theatres said: “As well as everyday clothing such as jeans, dresses and coats we have plenty at the other end of the scale.”
Sally described her journey into the world of costumes, theatre and performance and how from an early age she remembers being taken to Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Working for the Horse and Bamboo Theatre company before working her way up to the role of Deputy Head of Wardrobe.
The last costume sale took place around five years ago, and with the Crucible being one of the few remaining regional producing theatres fundraising for future productions is key.
Sally explained how a show will take around four to five weeks to make the costumes from start to finish as the costumes are so unique and particular to a show it is a very involved process.
Artistic Director, Robert Hastie, who has recently announced this will be his final season after eight years, also works extremely closely with the set and costume designers making sure it all comes together perfectly on stage.
When asked if there was a sense of sentiment when parting ways with such beloved costumes, she said: “Absolutely, you become attached to costumes.”
The Crucible opens its doors to around 400,000 people each year and making space for future productions is vital.
The costumes start from £1 offering a wide range of items for all budgets.
The sale will be held in the Crucible Rehearsal room from 10am- 4pm. To register your interest, visit the Sheffield Crucible Theatre page here.
