Sheffield residents campaign for bleed kits to be introduced into schools following fatal stabbing

An E-petition has been launched asking Sheffield City Council to introduce bleed kits in schools around the city.

Two local Sheffield mums, leading the effort, said: “We feel that a Bleed Kit in every school could prevent deaths like that of Harvey Willgoose. You can’t put a cost on saving a child’s life and for a relatively small cost, a Bleed Kit could prevent another tragedy.

The kits would include trauma shears to remove clothing to allow access to the wound, a tourniquet to slow down the rate of bleeding and gauze and bandages to clean the wound and prevent infection.

Each kit would cost £135.

People in Sheffield were supportive of the potentially life-saving idea.

Louise Thompson, 42, stay at home mum, said: “Yeah I think that’s a really good idea, especially after what has happened recently, it hits close to home.”

“It’s just scary as we assume that school is a safe place for our children to learn and grow. It can happen to anyone.”

David Merryfield, 56, agreed. He said: “Me and my wife are trained in first aid, which is such an important skill to have, so they should definitely be in all schools.”

But not everyone agreed with some people thinking more training would be required to use them.

Keira Pointon, 21, student, said “I don’t think it’s a good idea, if the children don’t have proper training they could end up misusing these vital kits.”

A GoFundMe was also set up by Fuse Alternative Provision, aiming to raise £5000, to supply the kits to all schools in the city alongside training for staff.

So far the GoFundMe has raised £765 and is being helped by a White-Collar boxing match in March with the pupils from Fuse Alternative Provision.

The event is being supported by Riley’s Boxing Gym and Pops Haywood to raise as much money as possible to go towards the bleed kits.
