A community band based in Broomhill will commemorate their 20th anniversary this September.
Lauren Newton, 41, established the band in 2005 after growing too old for her youth group and wanting to continue to pursue her love of music.
The band, Silver Spectrum, has around 40 regular members, garnering players all over the country who have come together to share their love of music and bring the community together.
They perform a diverse range of music including, classical, swing, jazz and contemporary pieces and have appeared at various venues over the years.
In 2022, the band performed Gustav Holst’s The Planets’ Suite at York St. John University, describing this as one of their biggest achievements.
Ms Newton said: “When I picked up my instruments at six years old I never thought I would play somewhere as incredible as the Planets.”
The community band took home the Platinum Award and a Gold Award at the finals of the Northern College of Music in Manchester in 2023.
Members have said the band has pushed them to keep playing music and picking up their instruments as well as meeting new people.
To celebrate their 20th anniversary, the band plan to perform in various locations around Sheffield and across the country later this year.
They plan to perform at Sheffield Cathedral and Western Park in the summer, alongside some pop-up events at the Winter Gardens for Classic Music Sheffield this March.
The band have said their goal for the future is to keep getting their name out there by continuing to do concerts and performing for the community.
Ms Newton said: “Getting to play at such prestigious places around the country has been such a high achievement for us.”
“We are always looking for people to get in contact and have a blast with us.”
