Two Sheffield primary schools have each won a free book bundle in celebration of World Book Day.

Charlotte Jenkins, 33, a stay-at-home mum and independent Usborne partner, organised an online book giveaway.

Shooters Grove Primary School in Stannington and Meynell Primary School in Wadsley Bridge, won the bundles, made up of fiction and non-fiction books. They will receive the prizes next week.

Ms Jenkins mainly expected responses from the Stannington area, but the poll ended up reaching schools all over Sheffield. 110 schools entered the giveaway, and nearly 8000 people voted.

She said the overwhelming response made her feel like a “mini-celebrity”, as her Facebook page gained over 600 followers in just a few days.

She added: “People seem to be getting on board with the love of reading, and that’s what I really feel like is at the heart of my business.”

She launched ‘Charlotte’s Little World of Books’ last April, when she was nearing the end of her maternity leave. She decided not to return to teaching and instead became an independent Usborne partner.

She said: “I’m still working with schools and children, which I love.”

Over the last year, she has organised many community events to get children associating enjoyment with reading.

She said: “Reading unlocks so much for you. It helps build your imagination and vocabulary.”

Her first event was the ‘Look for a Book’ scavenger hunt, which took place during May half term in the Stannington area.

Children used clues to find books, which could either be re-hidden or kept, which was great for children who do not have access to books at home.

For Children’s Mental Health Week, the first week of February, businesses or individuals could sponsor book bundles which promoted the importance of mental health.

She has also organised for schools to run sponsored reads. Depending on how much they raise, they can receive up to 60% free in books.

Since September, £2000 worth of books have been given out on behalf of Usborne.

Looking forward, Ms. Jenkins continues to plan future events.

She is spending World Book Day at Stradbroke Primary School, where an author event is being held.

Jodie Garnish, author of ‘The Spectaculars’, will be holding workshops and book signings for the children there.
