Film festival puts spotlight on city adventurers
SHAFF's free exhibition in Sheffield Winter Gardens on Saturday.

Sheffield filmmakers and adventurers will be showcased in an annual festival returning to the city this month.

The Sheffield Adventure Film Festival will be running in the Showroom and Workstation venues with a focus on locally-made content.

A short film loop was shown in Sheffield Winter Gardens this weekend and will be repeated next weekend, giving the public a taste of what the festival is about in one of the city’s celebrated green spaces.

Festival organiser Matt Heason said the aim of the festival was “to inspire people to get outdoors and make the most of their surroundings”.

The event is a part of Sheffield’s Festival of the Outdoors with the city being famous for its nature and proximity to the Peak District. The films featured showcase different outdoor activities such as climbing, water sports, running and biking.

A Made In Sheffield category is a key part of the event, with films made by local people or featuring local athletes and adventurers in and around the city.

This year also features specialised run and climb film categories made in Sheffield, highlighting even more locally-produced content than in previous years.

As well as film screenings, the festival also hosts talks on sustainability, filmmaking and different adventure activities from industry experts. An outdoor-themed pub quiz and immersive VR films are also on the programme, encouraging viewers to get involved.

A majority of the films are independent and produced by people from all over the world- this aims to put Sheffield on the map as a city of culture as well as put local talent on a global stage.

The festival and filmmakers work with global brands such as Red Bull, Patagonia and Rab, as well as local companies like Thornbridge Brewery, Core Climbing and Wild Moose. The festival’s celebration of local people and businesses is a key part of its aim to be welcoming and showcase the Outdoor City.

Sheffield Adventure Film Festival runs from 21-23 March, with showings happening at the Showroom cinema and talks, VR experiences and workshops happening in the Workstation. Full details of screenings are available online.
