A community speedwatch group is pushing for more members of the public to help volunteer and ensure roads in the north of Sheffield become safer.

The Loxley Valley and Hillsborough Speedwatch Group sparked discussion during a community meeting of Sheffield Council when they called for more help to tackle the problems of speeding which they say is creating unsafe roads.

A community speedwatch scheme sees members of an area, with support from local police, record details of speeding drivers using detection devices to improve road safety.

Richard Hakes, a member of the community group, told the North Local Area meeting on February 27: “We enjoy doing what we’re doing and we receive a lot of comments saying we’re doing a great job, but for us to continue, we need more volunteers.

“The comments are nice but no one wants to actually come forward and do it, we are mostly retired but we do have fun.”

Mr Hakes assured drivers that they did not want to prosecute people but rather to make them aware of their speed and ensure the area’s roads become safer.

Loxley Road was mentioned as one which has seen a particular increase in speeding vehicles.

Mr Hakes added: “I have lived here for 75 years and now I’m thinking Loxley Road in the last few years has been worse than ever.”

The Star newspaper publishes the locations of where speeding cameras have been placed around Sheffield, as the aim is to prevent speeding and increase awareness, compared to wanting to prosecute.

Jenny, who only gave her first name, lives in Stannington and asked during the meeting what the punishment was for being caught speeding and if it was just a “nice letter” of warning.

Police Inspector Nick Dodsworth, of the North West Neighbourhood Team, said “anyone who is reported receives a letter from the police” and added that repeat offenders are paid a visit to receive advice and that a prosecution could follow on from that.
