Body cameras now mandatory for tram staff following rise in abuse

A recent spike in anti-social behaviour has caused Sheffield Supertram to make it mandatory for its conductors to wear body cameras, its operator has announced.

The policy has been introduced to serve as an “effective deterrent” against the crime and disorder faced by Supertram staff members.

During a trial two years ago, staff members reported feeling “safer” using the cameras.

James Stewart, Supertram’s head of customer service and operations, said: “The safety and wellbeing of our staff and passengers is our top priority.

“The introduction of body cameras is a vital step to ensure a safer working environment for our frontline colleagues.

“These cameras not only help deter anti-social behaviour but also provide crucial evidence when needed.

“We are proud of the positive impact they have already had and look forward to continuing our commitment to safety and security.”

Tram operators in Manchester and Nottingham reported positive results after their staff have been wearing body-worn cameras for a number of years, with Sheffield now looking to replicate this zero-tolerance stance on anti-social behaviour as part of their ‘report all incidents’ pledge.

Karl, a Supertram conductor, told Shef Live that despite having experienced issues with customers in the past, his camera has worked as a deterrent against such behaviour.

He said: “The cameras have been in use since August of ‘23, they’ve just made it mandatory as a safety feature because they’ve seen a fall in crime rates on public transport everywhere with body cameras so they’ve copied it.

“It’s working, the cameras do work. You don’t see many issues, it’s only when you get really picky with someone. It’s one of them where you’ve just got to let it go.

“If you’re fine for them, they’re fine for you.”

Karl’s colleague, who chose not to be identified, added: “It’s just come into play, being mandatory.

“They’ll help in the long run, definitely. I’ve always worn them anyway, I’ve been here since May and I’ve worn it since May.”
