A student hopes to fundraise £400 by running the Sheffield Half Marathon in honour of her grandad who suffered with testicular cancer.

Eliza Ridout, 18, an architecture student at the University of Sheffield is taking part on Sunday in the race for Yorkshire Cancer Research (YCR).

She said: “In his last few years of his life he really was quite immobile.

“It’s like I’m running for him because he couldn’t.”

Miss Ridout has a fundraising goal of £400 and so far has reached over £300.

Her choice to fundraise for YCR was also influenced by the fact that Yorkshire is one of the hardest areas hit by cancer.

The Sheffield Half Marathon is being organised by Run for All and runners are raising funds for charities across the region.

Miss Ridout explained how she had not undergone any formal training leading up to the half marathon but has completed a 13k run before and completes 5k runs every week as part of hockey sessions.

She said: “It’s a really great way to go and meet new people and I think it’s just a really cool thing to say, I’ve done a half marathon.”

The half marathon route starts in the city centre, goes up to Ringinglow and finishes back in the centre.

Miss Ridout has expressed her excitement for the half marathon and described it as a “great community experience” and is hopeful in making it to the finish line.

She said: “School children wait outside and they hand little sweets and stuff and everyone is cheering you on.”

Donations for Eliza’s fundraiser can be made online here and donations for Yorkshire Cancer Research can be made at the charity’s website.
