A vital Burngreave refuge says it is in danger of closing if they cannot raise enough cash for a new lease.
Spital Hill Network is asking for support to keep the recently reopened Ashram Community Centre going.
Deborah Egan, Project Lead at Spital Hill Network and an Ashram volunteer said: “Radical cuts have been made to funding grassroots voluntary community action.
“Answering needs has become critical, this is why we created Spital Hill Network, for and by this community.”
The centre offers a range of services, including language lessons, housing support, benefits assistance, and a weekly free community meal serving over 1,000 meals since October 2024.
Each Thursday they provide around 40-55 hot meals and drinks for free to anyone in the community.
One user said: “I don’t want to think about where I might be without the centre.”
Another said: “Their meals have helped me so much.”

Ashram unites local community groups and voluntary organisations.
Hendrika Stephens, an Ashram volunteer said: “Having somewhere to gather is vital, where people can share their experiences, and provide one another with solidarity.
“They help eachother navigate what is a very hostile environment for new comers into the UK.”
The centre is currently fundraising to cover its rent and secure its future, ensuring it can continue essential work.
Malcolm Camp, a volunteer at Ashram said: “We cleaned, we painted, we made it available as a safe place for the community to meet and share.
“Please help us to extend our lease and keep up work to ensure the building remains in the community domain.”

Hendrika Stephens said: “The Ashram is an invaluable and precious community asset, offering a welcoming and safe space to everyone that crosses its threshold.
“It has had an incredible and unexpected impact on the area bringing people and their voices together.”
The Spital Hill Network reopened the Ashram to cater for the urgent need for easily accessible community spaces.
They said they want to give new arrivals to this country a voice, and the necessary human support they need.
All money raised will go the Spital hill Network to secure the premises and allow time to make this much needed project sustainable for the future.
