Sheffield’s first independent cinema, The Showroom Cinema, is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

The Showroom hosted numerous events at the weekend to aid the occasion, including two exclusive screenings of the 1996 film ‘Brassed Off’, with director Mark Herman, producer Steve Abbott and actors Stephen Tompkinson and Melanie Hill in attendance who took part in a Q&A on the production of the film, at 7:00pm on the Saturday.

Mark Herbert, CEO of Warp Films, who worked as an assistant location manager on the film and hosted the Q&A, said: “I have very fond memories of working on the film, it was my first film and full credit.

“I loved the spirit of the community on the set. Pete Postlethwaite took me under his wing a bit and after the film finished we kept in touch and he helped a lot.”

Also over the weekend, The Showroom hosted Northern Exposure from Film Hub North, a touring film programme that share short films from filmmakers from across the North of England.

This production took place on Sunday at 5pm, with 11 short films screened over two hours. It was introduced by Film Hub North and Young Programmers, who spoke about upcoming funding, training and programming opportunities.

Showroom also hosted free tours of their projection booths over the weekend as part of The National Lottery Open Week.

The cinema, hosted in a former car showroom, has enjoyed a well accredited three decades, with the first two screens being opened in 1995, with two more screens opened in 1998 by ‘Brassed Off’ lead actor Pete Postlethwaite.

Over this time, they opened the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival in 2005 which also celebrates its 20th anniversary over the coming weeks.

The Arctic Monkeys have also filmed scenes on the roof of the venue, for a music video and the film ‘Four Lions’.

Mr Herbert also said: “I worked in workstation early in my career, then warp were there for nearly 10 years.

“Showroom was like a home and over the years we have helped many screenings and events there.

“It’s a cultural essential for Sheffield.”

Showroom Cinema was named the best thing to do in Sheffield by Time Out Magazine in 2021.
