Community speed watching group in Hillsborough and Loxley in need of more volunteers

Hillsborough and Loxley’s community speed watching group is asking for more volunteers in order to progress and expand their operation.

Stewart Kemp, who is now the acting coordinator of the group, revived the group nine months ago.

Since then they have had a successful road, with only six volunteers, soon to be seven, the group meets up twice a month in different locations around Loxley Road pre-approved by the South Yorkshire police to control the speed of drivers, but their real intention is to act as reminders for the people who are driving to slow down.

Mr Kemp said : “We’re very visible; high visibility jackets on, community speed watch lettering on the back and signage that we put out on the road so that an approaching vehicle are made aware that a community speed watch group is in operation. This gives them every opportunity to to slow down.”

He wants to highlight that their intent is never to catch drivers out but to make them aware of the speed limits so that the road can be safer for everyone, and so can be used by all.

“Our abiding aim is to be seen, to remind people why we’re present, and to educate more motorists, to get them to think about their speed.”

Mr Kemp said: “if you’re going above the speed limit, it’s more likely, if you hit someone, you’ll kill them, or they’ll be seriously injured”,

The community has shown its appreciation; as motorists are signalling and stopping by to say thank you, as well as during the cold days this winter, neighbours have come up to offer hot drinks and thanks for their presence and contribution to the safety of the community.

The volunteers goal is that this road is viewed “not as a preserve for vehicles alone, but as a shared space, for pedestrians, for cyclists, for horse riders”.

Now they are asking for more volunteers as Mr Kemp explains, “if we had more active volunteers, we could run more sessions and raise the profile of the work further.”
