Dismay for some as dogs allowed on Sheffield’s Supertram network

People have been airing their concerns after owners were given the go-ahead to bring their dogs onto Sheffield’s trams.

This news was announced by mayor Oliver Coppard, after a public consultation took place with over 10,600 responses on the matter.

Mr Coppard said: “Three quarters of people who responded to the survey were in favour of changing the Supertram network’s rules, which previously restricted dogs.”

The move was overwhelmingly supported, but some people have said they are now worried about using the network.

Tram user Rachel Cullen, 44, said: “I’m concerned about this. My daughter is autistic and is absolutely terrified of dogs in general, especially their barks. It’s a shame as it’s our main form of transport around Sheffield.”

One dog is allowed per passenger, with this new system that has been implemented.

The council announced this as a pilot system, and it will be reviewed every three months to address concerns and make changes if necessary.

Amelie Roy, 20, also expressed worries over the announcement.

She said: “I’m highly sensitive to dog fur, so I’m worried about whether I will suffer an allergic reaction on my most frequent mode of transport. I use it to get to university so it is a concern which I have.”

The South Yorkshire Combined Authority made the decision based off of success seen in different areas when trialled out.

Sean English, managing director of Supertram said: “With strong public support, we welcome dogs onboard our trams.”
