A first year journalism student at the University of Sheffield has described how she could have died from blood poisoning – which she though was just a hangover.

Journalism student Izzy Jakes, 19, started to feel unwell after a night out with friends. She was shaking uncontrollably- yet put it down to being hungover from the night before.

Things took a turn for the worse, and after passing out multiple times throughout Sunday night and Monday morning, Izzy decided to visit minor injuries with her flatmate.

Izzy said: “When my leg started really hurting my flatmate convinced me it was worth going to the doctors. I’m glad she did as things started feeling much worse after that.

“The whole time I was waiting I was trying not to pass out.”

Staff at the minor injuries clinic were concerned with Izzy’s symptoms and after examining her she heard them call for an ambulance for ‘a student with suspected sepsis’.

Izzy was immediately transported to Northern general hospital Sheffield where she was put on a drip.

She said: “At this point I started to realise it was serious, and I started freaking out as I’m not good with anything medical.”

Izzy spent three days in hospital, and was told that although she didn’t have sepsis she did have an infection of the bloodstream.

She thanked staff at the hospital: “I was definitely the youngest person there, the nurses were all really lovely, especially since I am nervous with needles

“I am very grateful for the way they looked after me.”

She is back to lectures now after spending two weeks at home to recover. Although she is still on crutches to support her leg, yet has said she is ‘really glad to be back and to see friends again’.
