Passengers have slammed Supertram’s ‘strange’ decision to no longer accept card payments for weekly tickets.
City-Wide 7 day tickets and SYConnect 7 day tickets can only be purchased in cash from 23 March, according to South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), which runs the tram service.
This change is being made to address concerns about misuse and fraud with these specific ticket types.
Tram users have expressed their dissatisfaction with these changes.
Khalid Bahir, 45, from Pitsmoor Sheffield said: “it is strange because everything is card these days. This is especially bad for the younger generation as they mostly use apple pay for everything. I only carry cards in my wallet so it is definitely inconvenient.”
Another passenger, Safa Shah, 26 , from Kelham, Sheffield said: “I don’t think many people carry cash, including me, so this change is surprising.”
Sean English, managing director at Supertram said: “We are committed to making a safe and secure travel environment for all passengers
“Removing the card payment option onboard for those specific tickets is an important step in preventing fraudulent activity, while still ensuring that customers have convenient ways to buy their tickets.”
John Henshall, general manager at TravelMaster, strongly supports Supertram’s decision.
He said: “ Customers still have multiple easy and secure ways to buy their tickets.
“We remain focused on providing safe, accessible and convenient ticketing options for everyone.”
