“Everyone has a camera these days” : Sheffield’s annual Photographic Society’s exhibition opens today

Sheffield Cathedral was picture perfect today as a photography exhibition launched with almost 160 entries.

The annual Photographic Society’s exhibition boasts prints on display from 36 members and in six different sections including: landscapes, portraits, natural history, photojournalism and a separate section for Sheffield and its environments.

John Scholey , the previous organiser for this exhibit said, “I think it gives the opportunity for the photography society to show what they’ve been doing to the public.”

This exhibition is also a competition, the public gets to vote for their favourite photograph through a ballot system, as society member Keith Brown said when remembering his first time in an exhibition;

“When I first had a picture submitted in Coalfield town in the West Midlands, that was 1977 . I was so pleased to have my picture displayed in front of the public..

Mr Brown added:, “Photography these days is everywhere, Everybody’s got a camera, everybody’s got a phone. So people can come see the exhibition, get ideas for photographs and think, Oh, I could do that. It’s all in the eye of the beholder. What you like will be different to what I like, with different ages and generations.”

Mr Scholey said: ” It is so important that it is in the centre of the city where everyone can see it. You will get people walking through who will come and see it, who wouldn’t have necessarily know nit was there, and that’s that’s good, because they’ll be surprised, and they’ll stop and have a look.”

The exhibition launch was delayed by two hours after having to move the displays, and will run until Sunday April 6. It will be open during the Cathedrals normal hours, you can find it on the left side.
