Images released as Sheffield’s S1 Artspace receives £1 million investment

New photos inside a former Sheffield bank which is being turned into an arts venue have been released following a £1 million investment.

The S1 Artspace is being created in what was the Yorkshire Bank at the corner of Haymarket and Commercial Street in Castlegate.

The investment from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) is to aid the project in its commencement of essential repair works to the grade II listed building that began in February 2025.

Louise Hutchinson, Strategic Director of S1 Artspace, said: ” We are incredibly grateful for their support, which is helping us make progress towards transforming this remarkable building into a dynamic and accessible cultural venue for Sheffield and beyond.”

The building, once finished, will be host to art galleries, independent bars and event spaces as a commitment to supporting artists studying in the city and fostering local talent.

S1 Artspace is contributing to the wider regeneration of Castlegate, an area which is known for its heritage and cultural significance across Sheffield. The Architectural Heritage Fund have gifted a £10,000 grant to the project to aid this.

It will compliment the forthcoming Harmony Works venue and other projects which aim to strengthen Sheffield’s creative scene and maintain its cultural significance.

Coun Ben Miskell, Chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee at Sheffield City Council, said: “Thanks to central government funding, these buildings have now been secured for future generations and put culture firmly at the heart of Sheffield’s city centre transformation.”

This project is in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University, building on a 30 year history of collaboration between the two institutions.

Professor Liz Mossop, Vice-Chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University, said: “We are proud to be at the centre of the region’s cultural offer.

“Since S1’s foundation by Hallam students and artists in 1995, we’ve seen the positive impact our relationship has had on attracting, nurturing and retaining creative talent in Sheffield.”

Originally built in 1871 as Sheffield’s General Post Office, it is a historical building that the project is moving into which overlooks Fitzalan Square and its central location with nearby public transport links makes it easily accessible.

Further details on this project can be found on the S1 Artspace’s website where updates will be published in the following months.
