New nightclub set to replace CODE and to prioritise student safety

The former CODE nightclub in Sheffield is set to reopen under a new name and new management, with a strong focus on modernising the student nightlife scene and improving safety measures.

CODE, one of Sheffield’s most popular student nightclubs over the last eight years, during which it has hosted 1,657 events and entertained 1.7 million customers, closed in November 2022 following what it described as “significant losses” due to a drop in student numbers and soaring energy bills. In a statement at the time, CODE said its electricity costs had risen by 500%.

Now, the space will be transformed into Hazy Club, which aims to bring a fresh energy to the city centre.

General Manager Matt Watson said: “We were initially aiming for May, but construction pushed things back but we are confident we will be ready for the start of the new academic year in September 2025.

“We’re really focusing on the safety side of things — there will be a medic tent on site, and we’ll be using entrance scanners to ensure everyone who comes in is legitimate.

“We’re also connected to other venues in the area, so if something happens, we can respond quickly and in coordination.”

The reopening comes as student nightlife across the UK continues to face challenges, with recent studies and headlines pointing to a decline in student club attendance.

Mr Watson acknowledged the issue but remained optimistic.

He said: “We know that student loans have increased, so affordability is key. So we are looking at cheaper nights specifically aimed at students, and we’re trying to create a space where they feel safe. That could be one of the biggest reasons they’re not going out — safety.”

The Hazy Club is the latest attempt to save the city’s nightlife following a turbulent few years for the industry.

The venue’s former operators have since moved events to DUO, a smaller site off West Street, citing lower running costs and a more central location as key advantages.

The team behind Hazy Club believes Sheffield’s nightlife is ready for a comeback — and is betting on student support to make it happen.

No official opening date has been confirmed, but updates will be announced in the coming months.
