Sheffield student takes on the London half marathon to support British Heart Foundation

A Biomedical engineering student and committed netball player will be raising money for the British Heart Foundation this April in the London half marathon.

Anna Clery, 21, who studies at the University of Sheffield has been training to complete the half marathon on April 12th.

Anna picked the British Heart Foundation as her chosen charity from working on cardiac related university projects including pacemaker failure and cardiac tissue engineering.

Anna said, “The British Heart Foundation simply stuck out to me as the obvious choice.”

Anna will graduate this summer and has been working hard on her end of year dissertation whilst staying committed to the University of Sheffield Netball club, amongst her training.

She said, “There’s no sugar coating it, I have a very busy schedule this year. Balancing all of this is really hard, and for the moment I am really pushing through to get to the finish line.”

One of Anna’s teammates, Larissa Kirby, 21, said, “I think what Anna is doing is amazing, anyone who dedicates that much time and energy for such a worthwhile charity deserves to be celebrated. I think I speak for myself and all our friends when I say we are really proud of Anna.”

Anna has been regularly posting her training progress on Tik Tok and Instagram to reach a wider audience. From the support she has gained she is now taking it further with the foundation’s social media team.

Anna’s whole family will be in attendance to cheer her on in London and will celebrate with a meal out.

She added, “After every run I’m always craving a sweet treat and this will probably be the most deserved one ever.”

The British Heart Foundation funds lifesaving research including the Cureheart programme, which is aiming to one day find new treatments and cures for inherited heart muscle diseases. They also fund ground breaking research using AI, which could help predict heart attacks a decade before they strike.
