Community pantry’s shutters receive glow up

A Frecheville community project has received a glow up thanks to a new paint job designed by primary school children from the area.

Last weekend the S12 Community Pantry’s outside shutters were repainted with colourful new designs, instead of the council repainting them dull brown.

Jayne Mason, a trustee of the pantry, said: “They’ve only been done less than a week and people are noticing it. It’s making the building pop now.”

Miss Mason also said that the shutters previously ‘looked an eyesore’ and had ‘not got very much of a curb appeal’, as the old paint had started peeling and was tagged with graffiti.

After getting the go ahead from the council she contacted several local schools to run a competition asking for the kids to create designs that reminded them of Sheffield and the local area.

They received 40 designs from children at Charnock Hall Academy and Rainbow Forge Academy, and then picked the best nine designs for the shutters.

Miss Mason made sure to take into account how the designs would transfer over from the landscape pictures to the portrait shutters.

After the design was finalised local artist Urszula was chosen for the job after having previously painted Mossbrook School’s swimming pool.

However, it did take a while for the shutters to actually be painted as they had to wait for a weekend without any rain.

The winning children are being invited to the pantry in the coming weeks so they can see their artwork on display and they will be given the chance to sign their shutter.

They also each received a certificate and both schools received a plaque for their efforts.

The next project the community pantry hopes to tackle is transforming the area outside into a community vegetable garden, which will help provide food for their Thursday lunch service.
